about the project

overview

Tick Tock Trivia is a fast-paced multiplayer trivia game where players race against a ticking Jack-in-the-Box in a mix of fun, suspense, and quick thinking! Players can choose their avatars, their difficulty level, and their trivia category before beginning the round! Try out our AI mode, where you can type in ANY theme and our AI integration will generate questions for your chosen topic!

Out of ten team games in our class, our professors chose our game as Best in Show! We were so honored to win this award and present our game at Digital World’s Convergence 2025.

concepting

When our team formed, we knew we wanted to make an inclusive and family-friendly game that everyone, no matter the skill level, was able to play. Our team really valued accessibility, and eventually we landed on the idea of a pass-the-mouse style trivia game, where players take turns answering trivia questions. The idea originated from three of our teammates, who were foreign exchange students from Spain – they told us about a game that was like trivia, except hot potato. We took this idea and ran with it, thus creating the award-winning Tick Tock Trivia!

my role

As the lead artist, my role consisted of designing screen layouts, planning out UI placement, concepting characters, and creating assets that aligned with our color scheme and style guidelines. My first task was to create our logo and our main character/trivia host. With some iteration and feedback from teammates, I designed Clocko, aptly named by my teammates.

Because we planned on having a cutscene where Clocko introduces himself and explains how to play, I was tasked with creating multiple poses for Clocko to switch between. We also used these poses for when a player answered correctly, answered incorrectly, or took too long to answer. He has a total of six unique poses – winking, welcoming, thumbs up, thinking, cheering, and anguished.

My next responsibility was creating our Jack-in-the-Box character, which functioned as a timer to let the know the player they are running out of time and add suspense to the gameplay. I wanted to make him seem mischievous and playful – a little frightening, but not too scary since our game is meant to be kid friendly. When a player runs out of lives, they get ‘jumpscared’ by Springo, indicating that they are out of the game. I animated Springo in After Effects to make it look like Springo was coming out of the box and the lever was winding up.

the avatars

I also made the player avatars. There are seven player characters to choose from – blue, green, orange, pink, purple, red, and yellow. Each character is designed with a unique personality so that everyone can feel represented by their character! The doodle-y aesthetic is relevant throughout the entire game, so I made the avatars to match!
